By preferred vendor you mean the name of a vendor where this item is obtained? A modifier will be visible to the merchant in Register when checking out and can appear on receipts so probably don't want that.

If you need a generic system for taking notes about inventory items we don't currently support that, you could consider keeping track of that information yourself.

Alternatively you could use tags. Tags are a nice way to give a shared meaning to Inventory item that you can use for your own purposes. You could make a tag for each vendor with names like "Vendor A" and "Vendor B", etc.
