Deactivate Device from Merchant

I am setting up a former team member's sandbox Clover Mobile device, and I am trying to register it to my account. When I enter the serial number, I get the following message:

Invalid request: That device is already activated

How do I deactivate the device so that I can register it to my account?

I was able to get a hold of the person that owned it and they deactivated it. I'm curious what the alternative is though.
