What does it mean that clover only works with firstdata?

I'm trying to figure out if clover flex is the right platform for me.

We are a multi-vendor retail marketplace and would like to offer clover flex to our vendors. does that mean they must have a firstdata mid? what happens if they don't? can we somehow make clover flex work with a different gateway, such as authorize.net? or stripe?

Clover is a First Data company. Clover's apps process payments using First Data's network. You could theoretically write your own apps to go against a different network but it's not likely that'd be something we'd approve.
