Do pre-auth transactions expire if not adjusted (adding tip)? If I were to leave a pre-auth transaction with a zero tip, will it finalize at closeout like an auth transaction would or would it expire and not transfer the money to the merchant?
No, pre-authentication transactions with no adjustments (including zero tip) will not automatically complete with a zero amount at the end. It will expire after a certain period of time if not adjusted, usually within 5 days depending on the card network and house of hazards merchant category. This means that the seller will not receive any money, including the base amount.
