PaymentConnector usage causes black screen flash on Clover Mini Gen 1

After initializing PaymentConnector via something like: 
new PaymentConnector(this, cloverAccount, paymentConnectorListener, remoteApplicationId);
my Clover Mini Gen 1 sandbox device experiences a momentary black screen flash. This also happens when I call a method like refundPayment using the payment connector.

It does not happen on newer gen devices

I noticed that the app is brought to the background and then back to the foreground momentarily. I'm thinking there is some sort of PaymentConnector activity being launched momentarily on the gen 1 minis. Any idea why this is the case on a gen 1 only?
