How to get the sort order for items in a category?

The v3 API provide a sortOrder property in the REST API for categories, but not for the items within a category. How can one get that?

I am trying to find the answer to this question too. Reading through the docs, it seems that you are not allowed to do this since Item <-> Category is a many to many relationship.
