Unpublish application - what happens

Hello, what is the purpose of UNPUBLISH at the app level? Will it remove the application from existing devices? We need to disable the ability to install any more instances of APP A, as it is replaced by APP B, but we do NOT want APP A to be automatically removed from clients who are using it.
